This February the 14th will hopefully mark the day that social media took on a new direction; one of integrity. Since the early 2000s we’ve been dealing with an ever growing issue of privacy and false information. Internet companies building empires by taking advantage of the capability the internet has in uniting the entire globe. These empires have unfortunately been built through the exploitation of its users. Taking all of our information and left us with nothing to show for it in over a decade. Until we’re faced with a decaying socio-political world where that very same information is being used against us.
Report as soon as you see it. Troll/bot networks on Twitter are a *dire* problem for adversely affecting public discourse & ripping people off. Just dropping their prominence as a function of probable gaming of the system would be a big improvement.— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) February 1, 2020Elon Musk – founder & CEO of SpaceX, also co-founder & CEO of Tesla, Inc
Then consider this article a report Mr. Musk.
Valentine’s Day is a day for the exchange of tokens of affection. Of little coincidence, it is also the day Block.one launches the public beta of its social media platform – Voice. The social media platform will have its own digital token that can be exchanged for the promotion of others’ content. This is a great feature even if it was all the platform had to offer its users, but the impact of Voice in our society is more profound than that.
In this article I’d like to consider the many aspects that Voice can be of value to us.
Impact of Voice: as a Form of Life and Life Form
I’m quitting Facebook. Not comfortable with the flood of false information that’s allowed in its political advertising, nor am I confident in its ability to protect its users’ privacy. Follow me (and Molly, aka The Thing of Evil) on Twitter, if you like.— Stephen King (@StephenKing) February 1, 2020Stephen King – A world renowned author. Some of his books have been turned to feature films, miniseries, tv series and comic books.
Each one of us has a voice and this voice is sometimes unique to us. It is how other people in society identify us, and it is how we express who we are to other people. And over the years we’ve learned how to turn it into one of our most powerful tools. It is how we communicate; voices share thoughts, voices discuss ideas, voices start and end revolutions, and it is also voices that unite us. This is how we manage to collaborate, build, and progress as a species. It is our voices that created languages so you could one day read this article using that voice in your head. I hear it in my head as I’m writing this and you too hear it as you’re reading this article. This voice in itself is a form of life.
The voice becomes a life form when it is representative of the individual. In a community of many members your voice becomes a representative of your person. It becomes the thing that differentiates you (your beliefs) from the next person’s. This how we’re able to have conversations as individuals and enables us to meet like-minded people in our communities.
The internet was meant to be an amplifier of both these forms of voice, instead the internet has become a tool to stifle this voice. To a point where the individual’s voice is being muted in favor of the voices of the majority. A popularity contest for trending topics on social media. In becoming a single voice, the majority now speaks on behalf of the minority, with the individual’s voice hidden deep in the search results. This imbalance of power has tipped the scales in favor of the majority and suppresses the power of the minority. Creating for an unfair environment to the individual on either side of the scale.
Voice will look to correct these injustices done to us by platforms like Facebook and Twitter. With this new iteration of social media, the individual will have a fair chance at getting their voice across. To reiterate, on Voice users can promote others’ content or promote their own content by using Voice tokens. Should it happen that someone else promotes their content ahead of yours, then you’d receive the initial amount of tokens you used to promote said content plus a few extra tokens on top. This ensures that you have a bit more tokens to promote future content. Fair right?!
Impact of Voice: on EOSIO
EOSIO is a blockchain protocol that can be implemented for many different blockchain uses. It is also being used by nations such as the Marshall Islands and Liberland. The former drawing inspiration from it to create their own sovereign currency, and the latter using it to administrate its government operations. All these entities choose EOSIO because of its far superior tech innovations over competitors. Voice (beta) will be tested out on an EOSIO purpose built blockchain before it is ready for release on the EOS blockchain. Voice could also go on to be deployed on other EOSIO based blockchains making it not only the first blockchain based mass application, but also the first to support IBC (Inter-Blockchain Communication) on such a large scale.
Because different blockchains operate differently, even EOSIO based ones, this would give the user options to connect to Voice through their favorite protocol. Each blockchain has its nuances and so do their communities. They are driven by different motives and goals for the future, which is what makes the EOSIO ecosystem so interesting to be a part of. All this great energy would help maintain diversity and bring that spirit of liberty that Voice represents.
Incorporating Voice onto other EOSIO chains would ensure that it isn’t reliant on a single blockchain for operation, making it much easier to scale into millions of users. As we know EOSIO based blockchains such as EOS and Telos are already handling more daily transactions than Ethereum and Bitcoin. The more the EOSIO ecosystem grows so will Voice, and vice-versa, as users get distributed to and fro one of its blockchains. Thus it is my hope that Voice will expand to other blockchains outside the EOSIO ecosystem.
Impact of Voice: in the World
That said, #Voice isn’t just blockchain version of something that exists – it’s a totally new experience. We believe the fundamental differences in its approach outweighs the bells and whistles that disguise the lack of transparency and perverse incentives of existing incumbents.— Brendan Blumer (@BrendanBlumer) January 31, 2020Brendan Blumer – CEO of Block.one and author (programmer) of EOSIO. Block.one is the blockchain (tech) company behind Voice.
Voice is the first social media platform where all of its users are verified. Even the verification processes of platforms like Twitter aren’t as secure as what Voice looks to deliver. Anyone will be able to read content on Voice, but to post your own content and to engage with existing content, you’ll need to prove your real world identity. This is to eliminate the plague we deal with of fake accounts and bots on traditional social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter etc. Fake accounts and bots are huge contributors of fake information all over the internet.
With growing global concerns over terrorism and fake news, Voice is a much welcomed entry into the social media space, especially from governments. Just the other day I was watching the Netflix documentary – Don’t F**k With Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer. It highlighted just how dangerous fake accounts can become to society. And then there’s also the concern of stolen identities, where someone pretends to be a certain individual by creating an account with the individual’s name. These accounts are then used to solicit information, favors, and/or money from unsuspecting audiences.
All these exploitations won’t be possible on the Voice platform because each user will have their real (government) names attached to their profiles. Ironically, despite governments’ concerns over blockchain being an enabler for terrorism, it is blockchain that ends up solving the very same issues surrounding terrorism and fake accounts. This powerful impact Voice will have at countering terrorism can be extended to other aspects of society.
For instance, Voice can be used to carry out verifiable voting processes for certain elections. Or be used by organizations/businesses looking to advertise on the platform. These procedures are transparent and users can see how the tokens are being used and how much is being spent on different departments. Users would benefit financially of course by selling their tokens, which such entities would then use to advertise or promote their content on the platform.
Voice hasn’t launched yet but we can already sense the huge impact it will have in our lives. It is the very first of its kind, and for better or worse, it will undoubtedly give rise to other platforms like it. I trust that this platform will be carried with the utmost of integrity and offer users a better alternative to the likes of Facebook and Twitter. If it is carried out as well as I hope it to be, then it will definitely bring back democracy to human expression.
Elon Musk and Stephen King are obviously intelligent individuals. Social media is what connects these different people, from seemingly different worlds, into a single environment. The fact that the negative effects of our current social media (Facebook & Twitter) is being felt all the way up to such prominent figures in our societies, goes to show just how bad things have become. The environment has become unhealthy and toxic to our well-being as human beings. Luckily, intellectuals from Block.one have been working on a solution that is soon coming to fruition.
Thank you for reading and uncovering the consequences of this solution with me. The date – Feb 14 – won’t be the same this year as in previous years. I’m actually looking forward to this Valentine’s Day. If she’ll have me, this year I’d actually have a valentine in Voice, and she’ll be bringing along Voice tokens to our date. Finally, I can get what I really want for Valentine’s Day – tokens of affection. I can’t wait!
Until the next one,
