Excited about Block.one’s recent initiative EOSIO Challenge we took to the streets of Twitter to share the news. Considering the challenge relates to Ethereum I thought why not tag some of their community members…
What followed was a debate (which is actually still going on while I write this) with pseudonymous Twitter user Antiprosynthesis and a host of EOS community members. During the back and forth tweets I was made aware of a little known fact that Antiprosynthesis had received $15,000 USD from an Ethereum based grant scheme to spend all day long on Twitter, in his words “aggregating Ethereum-related news, fighting information asymmetry and fine-tuning/signalling a consistent narrative for Ethereum (and ETH).” Basically he is paid to FUD projects which don’t start with the letters ETH. Decrypt wrote a great article detailing exactly who is behind the grants and how they work.
It’s one thing for passionate community members to argue and debate over who’s coin/protocol is better, but paying one side to fight the other? Is this really the type of toxic tribalism we want to encourage within our industry? We along with Brendan Blumer don’t think so…
Reading through the comments on Brendan’s tweet I noticed that Vitalik had responded stating “I think antipro’s tweets have been quite positive-sum overall, and he’s only one of the many recipients of the media QF. Has he ever said anything against EOS?”
Yes Vitalik he has said a lot, and not just against EOS… also if you look at the dates these tweets are just from the past 6 days!
Let’s hope Vitalik reads this and takes note of where and how these funds are being utilised. As much as we believe and rally around our chosen cryptocurrency or protocols, clearly it is in the best interest of the cryptocurrency industry as a whole to stamp out this kind of financially incentivised FUD.
