Without a doubt, the story of the Garbage Pail Kids (GPK) going digital on the WAX blockchain will be talked about for years to come by blockchain enthusiasts and GPK collectors around the globe. In just a week since launch, the Garbage Pail Kids went from selling out within the first 28 hours, to initial buyers of the cards making huge profits on secondary markets just a few hours later.
Their success continues to create ripples in the blockchain space. Based on data from DappRadar, two of WAX’s marketplace dApps – GPK Market and SimpleMarket – are dominating other dApps under the ‘marketplace’ category when it comes to the amount of total dollar volume being traded each day. Yesterday, the main market for trading GPK cards, GPK Market, managed to reach top spot as the dApp with the most users in the entire blockchain space.
Although GPK Market has since tracked back to second place (as of writing), it’s still processing at least twice as many transactions as its nearest competitor which also happens to be based on the WAX blockchain. Ranked 3rd by number of users, is the other WAX dApp – SimpleMarket, which caters for all NFTs on the WAX blockchain. SimpleMarket saw a surge in its user base due to the inclusion of Garbage Pail Kids cards in its marketplace. These great feats are as a result of a successful partnership and WAX sums it up nicely with the following tweet.
WAX has never made it easy to figure out what their next moves are, and it is tweets like the one above that create a sense of anticipation for whatever they’re planning next. The TOPPS x WAX partnership is certainly a big deal and one worth paying attention to as it is likely to set precedence for NFTs and in growing their popularity in the mainstream world. There’s also the fact that shouldn’t be understated, and that is – TOPPS is a producer of all sorts of card collectibles, not just GPK.
A glimpse into the future. The Garbage Pail Kids represents one brand that Topps is known for and they’re most known for their sports trading cards. However, GPK managed the importance of proving that the concept of digital cards works and that there’s a demand for them. It’s now apparent that most collectors understand the benefits that digital cards have over their physical counterpart.
A second series of Garbage Pail Kids is likely to follow in the near future, but do you think its success on the WAX blockchain has opened the door for other of Topps’ household names to make it onto the blockchain?
